What is ambient lighting and how do I achieve it?

Ambient lighting or general lighting is usually considered to be the base layer of lighting in your room illumination. It can come from a ceiling light, wall light or floor light. In the daytime natural ambient light is the light that you get through your windows, doors or skylights. Ambient light is the first step in any lighting plan and generally it would be the first light you switch on in any given room. Ambient lighting means the first step in your lighting plan and should never be the only light source that you have, unless perhaps in a corridor or passageway where minimal time is spent and no direct light is needed for performing certain tasks.

Your ambient lighting is there to soften shadows and to give a basic warmth to your room, if you think of your ambient lighting like the primer used before you paint then you should have an idea of how it should be used to best effect. It is the base coat of your design, and as such needs to be discreet and diffused, giving a subtle illumination without overpowering the room.

Ambient lighting can be achieved using many and various types of light fitting, but probably the best option if you are unsure of where to start is flush wall or ceiling lights that give a diffused type of light. These can be used singly or in a bank to create the perfect lighting effect. They are readily available in all sorts of styles from basic ceramic that you paint yourself to blend with your décor, to more elaborate designs that add a feature to your lighting. Remember that you can alter the tone of your base lighting using different strengths of lumens in your light bulbs to give even more structure to you design.

A central ceiling light or chandelier is another good way to add ambient light to your room and also works well as a focal point. There are hundreds of styles to choose from so take a little time to browse around to see what is available and you will find the right light for your room. Terrys Fabrics are ideal for this as they provide good quality products with a huge choice and have a dedicated support team of advisers to answer any questions that you may have. We also offer a completely comprehensive money back guarantee just in case your purchase is not quite right when it arrives.

To get the very best from the lighting in your room whether it be the lounge, kitchen or bedroom, it is necessary to begin your lighting with the ambient light source and to then build on this with other types of lighting. Things such as mood lighting that will give your room a more defined light source, and task lighting that is any light source that concentrates on one place, like a reading lamp or spotlight, should be added after your basic illumination is complete.

Your ambient lighting needs to be a fairly soft diffused type of light that gives the effect of having no actual central lighting source. In other words it is a blanket style of light that reaches right across the room and into all the dark or shadowed corners when possible. To achieve this it might be necessary to use more than one light fitting and as stated before a good way to do this is with wall lights or ceiling lights. These probably give best effects when they are flush to the wall, semi-flush or even recessed slightly, so the light given off is muted and diffused.

Once you have achieved the right ambient light level for your home it is time to introduce the next levels of lighting by adding more direct light sources such as statement lamps and spotlights that will enhance your basic ambient light illumination.

Try to compliment your ambient lighting with coordinating light fixtures and fittings to give an overall look of sleek design, and don’t forget that things like lamp shades, dimmer switches and coloured light bulbs, as these will give depth and structure to your finished room.
