The Arts & Crafts Movement

The Arts and Crafts Movement originated in Britain between the 1880s and 1920s. It emerged as a response to the Industrial Revolution and the rise of mass production, which many felt had led to a decline in design quality and craftsmanship. Advocates of the movement, most notably William Morris, believed that true design should be guided by artistry, individuality, and skill. Morris argued that manufacturing ought to be carried out—or at least overseen—by designers themselves, ensuring creativity and quality at every stage.

In 1887, the newly founded Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society officially gave the movement its name and held its first exhibition in London. This event marked the beginning of a design trend that would soon spread globally. Stylistically, Arts and Crafts design blends medieval Gothic influences—such as carved oak and hand-crafted detailing—with the organic forms of nature. William Morris, for instance, drew inspiration from florals and animals, producing hand screen-printed fabrics like his iconic Strawberry Thief. At its heart, the movement celebrated design that was individual, handcrafted, and full of meaning, made with pride and pleasure. Below is a mood board featuring design inspiration available at Terrys, celebrating this timeless and beautifully human approach to design.

The Arts & Crafts Movement

By blending traditional craftsmanship with timeless motifs, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen transforms every window into a tribute to heritage design, ensuring quality and soul in the modern home. View Now
William Morris Strawberry Thief Outdoor Fabric Navy
Embodying the soul of the Arts & Crafts movement, this navy Strawberry Thief fabric brings William Morris’s most iconic 1883 woodcut design into the modern garden. Characterised by its focus on British flora and fauna, the pattern celebrates the "honesty of design" by capturing thrushes darting amongst garden greenery. While traditionally a delicate textile, this outdoor iteration marries utilitarian durability with organic beauty. It rejects mass-produced blandness, offering a handcrafted aesthetic that is both water-resistant and UV-stable. It’s a perfect fusion of nineteenth-century heritage and practical, high-quality craftsmanship for the contemporary home. View Now
