Glenn Gissler is the President of Glenn Gissler Design, Inc., a Manhattan-based award winning design firm that was founded in 1987. Glenn has a stylistically diverse approach to design providing clients with creative solutions that match their lifestyle. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, receiving degrees in fine arts and architecture. Glenn has been listed as a top designer in House Beautiful, New York Magazine and New York Home. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
The environments I create are calm, considered and comfortable integrating fine and decorative arts in a rich visual dialogue.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I like to spend a lot of time speaking to my clients about how they live right now, how they spend their time, and then seeing where they currently live to get a handle on what is important to them and how to improve their home lives in all ways. Then together we invent the future! I assume the role of guide and captain hopefully taking them to a place where their lives are beautiful, comfortable and function with ease.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
Wow – good question! I have had the opportunity to work with some leaders of taste and style of our time. My first client in 1987 was Michael Kors; I have worked collaboratively with him for nearly three decades which has been wonderful and inspiring. Early on I worked on a home for Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell in the midst of their boutique hotel phase, and with Kelly & Calvin Klein! They were all models of success in design -developing a vision and sticking with it!
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I immerse myself in my extensive library of books seeking images, ideas and strategies that can create spontaneous combustion!
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
As crazy as it may sound when I was still 13 years old I declared that I wanted to be an interior designer when I grew up! It wasn’t always a linear process and I spent seven years in college – but here I am – I did it! My advice? Be careful what you wish for and be very specific!
