Designer insights with Delight Morris

Delight Morris is the founder of Orange Bay Company, which she established in 2009 with her husband Rudy. Delight wanted to offer a very special shopping experience to customers in Bermuda. To achieve this it became her mission to create a better living environment for the local community and to give to local organisations and those in need. So all furniture donations generate a contribution to Bermudian charities, plus Delight donates a portion of annual profits to local charities. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Delight Morris.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?

At the heart of my creative aesthetic is an eclectic mix that marries order with entropy to create an organized yet appealingly organic mess. I love to create lush spaces that are brimming with intrigue.

2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?

The starting point is always uncovering who the client really is. I explore their spaces and have them share their favourite things to give me an insight into their personality and a sense of the aesthetic.

3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?

I went to university in Philadelphia in the 90’s and musical and poetic luminary Jill Scott was just building the foundation for her eventual ascent into international celebrity. We worked side by side in adjacent boutiques and spent hours after work discussing the imperatives of being true to our authentic artistic selves. I was inspired by her mission of building a life centred around connecting with our truth.

4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?

I live in a balmy mid-Atlantic paradise, and simply stepping out onto my verandah each morning fills me with inspiration. Bermuda’s pink sand, turquoise waters, juicy green foliage and the understated elegance of our steeped white roofs is the perfect backdrop to get my creative juices flowing.

5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

While I’ve always had a passion for design, I initially settled into the safety of a career in accounting. Eventually my husband and I built boutique Orange Bay Company and used it as the platform to share my talents at reshaping spaces that inspired its occupants. My favourite quote for designers hesitant to take the plunge follows: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure!”
