Designer insights with Petra Hofmann

Petra Hofmann is a surface pattern designer, as well as lead designer at her new label Perunoto, working from Germany. Petra loves to create new designs, in particular for surfaces and related products. Having lived in Japan for a number of years she is inspired by Japanese culture, especially beautiful oriental patterns. This ultimately led her to a career in surface pattern design. She now creates patterns for stationery, textiles, wallpaper and the interiors market. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Petra Hofmann.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?

I design bold, graphic, bright patterns and illustrations for a pretty and colourful daily life.

2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?

I take notes and ideas from my sketchbook, hand-draw or paper cut my designs first, then I scan the images and play around with them digitally.

3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?

After graduating in graphic design I worked for a Studio specialized in packaging design. I was lucky to work with a very talented designer. I've learned so much from her, she always knows what she's talking about, she has a good eye and can provide the right kind of feedback. We complimented each other, so our teamwork was just awesome.

4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?

I have a box where I gather every small or big piece of thing I love. That could be images, pieces of fabric, paper. Looking through it always inspires me.

5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

I entered into the world of surface pattern design when I came across the ABSPD ecourse. It has given me so many new skills and confidence.You have to find out your style, bring character to every piece you create, keep learning, keep networking, stay true to yourself! And start now!
