1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?

I’ve always been drawn to bold geometry, clean lines and Deco flourishes. The design of ‘80s hotel lobbies made a big impression on me as a child!

2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?

I gather visuals, songs and objects that inspire me and speak to the overall feel of the project. I keep them close and return to them throughout the process.

3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?

I admire the patience and creative drive of my brother Andy. I’m currently collaborating with him on an article featuring the artist’s studio he built by himself in his backyard. Andy always has a project going, and he takes his time to make sure it’s done right. He encourages me to slow down and wait for that moment when you know the end result is truly interesting and everything you’d hoped for.

4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?

I draw inspiration from the creativity of others. Whether it’s walking through a beautifully designed building or watching a film with an unforgettable aesthetic, when I experience art that speaks to me, I am compelled to create.

5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

As a child, I played “school”, wrote stories and redecorated my family’s house. As an adult, those same passions have emerged time and time again, combining in interesting ways. I’ve taught school and fine arts classes, written creatively and professionally, and opened an antique booth. Now I’m teaching people about design through the decades by blogging. Pay attention to your natural interests and their power to play a big role in the evolution of your career. They just might come together in a way that makes total sense!
