Gill Nono is a British designer, held in high regard for her modern fabrics and wallpaper designs, which she has been crafting professionally since 1995. Gill’s style is different, quirky and with a hint of fun. In fact, her brand is fuelled by a love of 70s and 80s art deco and pop art. Her label is recognisable worldwide, renowned for offering an exciting collection of fabrics adorned with playful graphic designs. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Gill Nono.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
Bold quirky graphics with a hint of fun! I want to create distinctive homewares for individuals looking for something different with the wow factor. I’m influenced by my love of 70’s and 80’s interiors.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Fashion, travel, art exhibitions, movies all provide the seeds for new collections. Inspiration is everywhere! I always purposely do something different to the mainstream brands and follow my own trends.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
Difficult there are lots I love to work but if I had to pick just 2…I greatly admire Jonathan Adler the American potter, designer and author. His interior design work on the groovy pads of the USA is awesome and all makes me smile. I love the Grande Dame of British fashion Vivienne Westwood for her irreverent, wit, eccentricity and unsurpassed talent.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
My top tip is to leave the studio even if its to go for a walk around the vintage shops of Manchester Northern Quarter or if I’m lucky the souks of Marrakesh!
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Lot’s of ups & downs! With the realisation that big isn’t always good. My advice would be stay true to yourself. Be patient learn the basics then follow your heart. Don’t give up & most importantly be unique.
