Clementene Coates is the creator of beautiful and bespoke upcycled furniture, all of which is painted by her own hand in Yorkshire. Clementene has been creative and passionate about interior design for as long as she can remember. She has a BA (Honours Degree) in Classical Greek and Roman Art & Architecture, so appreciates the history of art. Clementene also had a successful career in law, before returning to her first love of working with antique and vintage furniture. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Clementene Coates.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My painting style is very eclectic and echoes the classical Italian Baroque and French Rococo eras of design; the decorative Victorian and Edwardian periods; as well as the elegant Scandinavian style.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Antique furniture has a history; a story to tell. My focus is to breathe new life into each piece I restore and paint, but also to embrace any little imperfections and make features from them; to give them charm.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
Definitely Gary Callaghan, a wonderfully talented and versatile professional antique furniture restorer and cabinet maker. Equipped with over 20 years’ experience, any damaged furniture I have I place in his very capable hands. I’ve rarely come across someone who possesses such passion for their craft and who has such a unique and rare skill set. Antique restoration is a dying art form and I’m in constant awe of both his work and his craft.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I have a degree in Classical Art & Architecture, so I’m forever reaching for my old books. When time permits, I visit museums and art galleries. Although I’m mostly inspired by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside I live in.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Disillusioned by a career in law I pursued my passion for painting furniture. My advice to those wanting to change career: be brave, have a clear vision, work hard and don’t be put off by inevitable bumps in the road. If you want it badly enough, you can and will achieve it.
