Debbie Lillard is an internationally recognized organizing expert, working from her brand Space to Spare, since 2003. Debbie still takes a hand on approach with her clients, although over the years she has hired and trained a team of experienced NAPO organizers too. It is now her mission to show others that they can simplify their lives by putting her tips into practice. Debbie has also been featured on A&E’s Hoarders and HGTV’s Mission: Organization. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style is minimalistic. I design a room for functionality first, then add little pops of color, decorative accents and personality as a finishing touch.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
With new clients I do a home walk through and ask them what the function of each room is. We start with the worst room and categorize, purge & rearrange.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I worked with Marc Summers, (Restaurant Impossible producer with HGTV) on a pilot. He doesn’t mind working in really bad conditions to make a home or restaurant more functional and attractive because he knows that ultimately the owners will improve their lives by improving their surroundings. He’s not just about the ratings and genuinely cares about the people he works with. He gets the value of organizing before you renovate.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
My inspiration is an empty room, the clients’ vision and a few pieces that they love. We build around those. The client is happy because it’s their vision, not mine.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Persistence and willingness to say yes to new opportunities, plus being open to new directions for my business and marketing myself as an expert in home organizing. For others who want to do this, join NAPO, educate yourself and then decide how you want your business to fit into your lifestyle.
