The Summer House

Hello again to one and all!

We’re approaching that time of year again where we live in the vain hope, rather than the guaranteed certainty, of warmer weather;

or if we’re really lucky, long, hot, scorching days, where we endeavour to dwell for longer in the great outdoors, at every given opportunity.

For the purpose of my summer feature this year, ‘The Summer House’ means more than just a hut on the beach! It means the home or space we live in during those warmer, if not sunny, summer months.

As usual I have endeavoured to source some inspirational ideas by scouring some of the top designers and design sources to see what’s hot and what’s not, for indoors and out this season.

In my journey through the inspirational highway, I have come across some colourful and enlivening ideas on how to add energy, zest and colour to your summer season, indoors and out.

I share these images with you, with full credit to their sources and with some carefully selected and relevant product, tips and ideas, to help you achieve these vibrant and enlivening looks for less.

There’s everything from this year’s maritime-seaside and summer-florals fabric collections, to giving the shed a much needed lick of colour as part of your garden glam up, pretty picnics with English rose florals, quick, easy and fun ways to add colourful glamour to your camping plans, current and topical events such as the Royal Baby, the trend for Rough-Luxe and Copper, the ‘Great Gatsby’ film release, the trend for Statement Stripes and the hotly tipped Colour of the Year - Emerald green.

Whatever your plans for the summer, I hope you find something here that will help you on your way to a bright and cheerful journey through the warmer months, regardless of the weather.

Here’s wishing you a summer full of warm sunny days and even warmer memories.

The Indoor House

So the warmer days are on their way and our minds are turning to getting outdoors, or to freshening up the indoors, to welcome in the summer season, lift our spirits and re-energise not only ourselves but our homes too. For some quick and easy tips on how to achieve this much needed freshen up, take a look at the Simple Spruce Ups section of my Spring Feature. If after you’ve read it, you feel ready to start an interior summer shake up, then let’s start by having a look at some refreshing summer themed fabrics and seasonal prints.

The Outdoor House

The Outdoor House essentially refers to any space outdoors, where we are happy to spend a good proportion of our summer time. It’s an outdoor room if you like, that could be anything from an open patio space to some raised decking, a pergola or gazebo, a shed, a hut, a makeshift canopy, the sunny patch of grass where you always pitch the deckchairs, or a purpose-built, dedicated summer house.

Creating and ‘dressing’ such a space need not take hours or be prohibitively expensive. A few simple style and colour tips and some affordable products, are all you need to turn even the dowdiest of back-yards or neglected garden sheds into an outdoor retreat that will provide you with your own little corner of paradise for the summer months.
