Autumn/Winter - Style Trends - Tactile Textures

Tactile Textures

As we have already mentioned, fabric is important in interiors this season with natural fibres and textures playing a big role. Engineered fabrics and finishes take their place alongside the naturals to provide a rich and varied tactile experience; but, 'Lo-Tec' is the mood over 'Hi-Tec', celebrating rudimentary crafts and handmade techniques as consumers warm to the tactile charms and qualities of hand-made goods. You could say that autumn/winter 2013-14 is a celebration of tactile qualities.

Touch is more valuable than function this season, as touchable textures inspire warmth and comfort and embody a truly homely atmosphere. 2013 will be about experiencing and engaging in your home rather than passing by it. Mixing textures with in a variety of mediums is key. Luxe finishes such as plush pelmets, paisley patterns and furs will play their part and two of the materials playing a major role in interior design this season are suede and wood. The colours of sand, stone and 'greige' will prevail as textures and finishes take their inspiration from natural minerals, roots, fibre and knotted, weathered wood.

The lean towards artisan and handmade looks like it's here to stay for a while, as embroidery and knitting are a major 'textural' trend for 2013 too. The season sees large scale knits and macramé taking off in decor and furniture in a big way as well. Household items such as colourful hand knotted carpets, storage baskets, pouffe's and foot stools will all be given a modern twist with deep, sculptural textures that can only be produced with a handmade charm, that cannot be paralleled by any industrial production process. Pieced and patched fabrics, raw wood, hand crafted textiles, hand knits, wrapped and plaited wool/textures, wicker, leather, mohair, plaids and rough edged, speckled glaze ceramics mix together to create a feeling of natural, unself-conscious style.
