How to Frame a Roman Blind with Accessories and Window Dressing

Who says that Roman blinds should remain as is? You can actually combine the beauty of Roman blinds with other accessories and even curtains, but you have to carefully consider the types of materials, the combination of colours, and the lengths of each, among other factors, since there’s a thin line between stylishly chic and tacky. Here are a few things to consider:

Choose the Blinds First

You have so many choices in terms of fabrics, as well as colours, prints and textures that you will find several Roman blinds that will suit your interior décor beautifully. Select the blind to suit the purpose of the room. For example, in bedrooms Roman blinds with blackout or dim-out properties are a good choice as they will help to keep out unwanted light.

Avoid Mixing Prints

Just as mixing a few or several different types of prints in clothes is a big no-no in fashion, it’s also a big no-no in successful interior design. This is because combining two or more types of printed materials into a single arrangement will result in a clash that will be ugly no matter the justifications made for it. Plus, the results can overwhelm the eyes and make the room look smaller and cluttered.

The rule of thumb: If you want printed blinds, then you should pair them with solid-coloured curtains or vice versa. You should ideally pick up a dominant colour on the printed blinds and highlight it by choosing the same colour for your curtains. That way your window treatment will have a unified effect. The same principle applies to walls, printed blinds look amazing against plain walls, whereas plain blinds can look stunning next to patterned wallpapers.

You are well-advised to get swatches of the two materials, if possible, for mixing and matching before making your choice. Hold the swatches up to the window during different times of the day and night to see the effect natural light changes the look of the room.

Fabric Choices

Roman blinds can be made from virtually any type of fabrics, from lightweight silk and satins to medium weight Jacquards and velvets. In bedroom luxury fabrics will add a touch of refined elegance with a hint of romanticism, while living rooms and dining rooms can look stylishly sophisticated when made with cottons or Jacquard materials.

Using Roman blinds in kitchens and bathrooms, poses a slight dilemma as you need to choose a fabric that is sufficiently robust to withstand humid atmospheres and easy to clean. Cotton and polyester/cotton fabrics are probably the best choice.

Use the Treatments for Illusion

When combined in the right way, the combo of blinds and curtains can make a small room appear larger, usually by making the ceiling appear taller and the window appear wider. Your best choice may be Roman blinds installed a few inches below the ceiling line, which changes the height perception, and the curtain rod placed at the same level, except that it should extend 30 to 60mm beyond the window’s width to keep the window visually in proportion.

You should also look into accessories for the window treatment but, again, don’t overdo it. You can add a simple tieback for a draped effect, pelmets for a clean look, and wall-mounted statement pieces and coordinating cushions to give a sense of harmony and balance to the room.
