You may have guessed where we want to head with this title and you would be right! Simplicity and well-being in decorating would have to have something to do with that ancient Chinese tradition - Feng Shui. Feng Shui is not a decorating style - like minimalist interior design it is more of a discipline and its concepts can be found within a lot of modern interior design styles.
Everything from the layout of a room, its design and choice of materials should be in harmony with nature and ultimately this is a logical way to design interiors. An important aspect of Feng Shui is the engagement of your five senses throughout the home. This could be different from room to room as you expect different things from each.
The bedroom and bathroom for example or places to unwind whereas the study needs inspiration and creativity. The dining room and kitchen should stimulate the appetite and spark good conversation. When you are decorating try to think of ways that you can engage your senses and satisfy the purpose of a room. Here are some ideas for the bedroom that you can follow or use to give you inspiration and thought for other rooms in the home.
- Starting with sight, think about the need for privacy and the control of light in a bedroom. This will help you to sleep better at night or to rest when you are feeling under the weather. Blackout roller blinds will be the perfect addition to a Feng Shui room - look for blue colours which symbolise healing and relaxation.
- Give your bedroom the right scent by choosing fresh flower arrangements, scented candles or scented pouches under the pillow and in wardrobes/drawers. Lavender has a good association with relaxation as do bergamot and sandalwood.
- Sound could come from some relaxation CDs or a mini water fountain. You might also find that an attractive wind chime that matches your décor to be soothing when falling to sleep.
- With taste, why not spare some surface space for a beautiful Chinese tea set and a selection of soothing teas to drink in the morning or before bedtime.
