Your living room is a place which is supposed to be relaxing and calming – and if it doesn't exactly fit the bill right now, the following tips can help you to make your living room a little oasis of calm in a sea of stress.
Colours: You can produce a calming effect through the colours you choose for your living room. Light colours and a generally muted palette is the way to go here. Stay away from bright colours, especially reds and yellows. Blues and light greens are soothing and as an added benefit, these lighter shades make the room feel more open, which also helps you relax in your living room.
Choose light, calming colours for the walls as well as your furniture. A little bright colour is okay, but try to limit their use to accent pieces such as lime green curtains or teal curtains, rather than using them for larger areas in your living room. Bring harmony by using matching coloured cushions or rugs. Patterns: Patterns should be subtle, since they tend to add an active feel to the space; and patterns should be used only for accent pieces if you're going for a look and feel which helps you relax.
Solid colours are more restful for the eye, but this doesn't mean that you can't add visual depth to the room. Texture is the way to compensate for the lack of pattern in your décor. Different fabrics can add to the room's appeal through tactile, rather than visual means. There are some fabulous patterned curtains online to choose from. Removing Clutter: Clutter is among the biggest enemies of relaxation. The more cluttered your living room, the harder it will be to relax. When you're surrounded by a mess, it's impossible to fully relax and it's definitely not calming to spend time in a cluttered living room.
Get rid of items that you don't need or use and if there's anything which you don't actually need to keep there, put it in storage rather than leaving it in your living room where it will counteract the effect you're trying to create. Reduce knick-knacks to a minimum – you'll definitely notice the difference.
Lighting: Lighting makes a huge difference to any room feels and if you want your living room to be a calming place, you should dispense with overhead lighting in favour of lamps. Soft light is the way to go; use reading lamps to provide brighter lighting where it's needed, but keep the overall level of light a little lower and you'll find that it's much easier to catch your breath, relax and unwind in your living room at the end of a long day.
