Magical christmas colour schemes – traditional red and green

Red and green have been the traditional Christmas colours for many years, whilst many people believe that prior Coco Cola Father Christmas only worn green is open to debate! However, within the world of interior design red and green colour schemes have been used for many, many years irrespective of the time of year!

If you are thinking of having a traditional style colour scheme within your home this Christmas then you will probably be thinking along the lines of using red and green.

This is of course a logical choice particularly if you already have these colours in your main rooms. Green or red curtains make life really easy as you can simply compliment these colours within your Christmas theme.

In lounges add warmth by including tartan or checks in red and green, do away with the central overhead ceiling light and use table and floor lamps to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. If you have an open fire Christmas is the time to put it to use! It may be a little messy and time consuming but it adds to the overall ambience beautifully! Take all precautions, such making sure your chimney is swept and nothing is blocking it and use fire guards to reduce the chance of accidents or red hot ambers spitting onto your carpet!

In dining rooms use these traditional Christmas colours as the theme for your table setting. Use candelabras on the table, along with touches of holly and ivy. As with the lounge don't have your guests eating in a gloomy murk, add floor lamps or place additional table lights on a dresser or side-board.

You can also make a focal point of your windows by dressing them up with tinsel wound around curtain poles or use the end finials to hang large baubles in ascending lengths, it is the little touches such as these which will make your rooms look magical and stylish throughout the festive season.

Remember less is more in all rooms you decorate in a traditional Christmas style. Dress your tree entirely in red and green to create a stunning and elegant interior to be proud of! Don't go mad by adding too many other colours as this will spoil the simplicity and whole Christmas effect you are trying to achieve!

These traditional Christmas colours look stunning in all styles or interiors, particularly in older homes and farmhouse styled interiors.
