Magical christmas colour schemes – plaids and checks
Tartans and checks all great winter staples in the world of interior design. It's easy to add a plaid rug to the foot of the bed or to use as a throw in the front room to snuggle into during the festive season.
You don't have to belong to a specific clan to introduce the rich warmth and depth of colour tartans and checks can bring to your home!
Add tartan ribbons to your door wreath as a welcoming touch to your guests. In the lounge use tartan throw placed over the arms of your sofa or chairs to add chic styling which is both practical as well as aesthetic. If you have time you could always quickly cover an old footstool with a contrast in tartan to add interest. Mix and match tartan colours, using deeper colours such as racing green and red or deep blue and beige for a traditional look to your home.
If you have an open fire you could use a tote style bag to transport your logs, or simply use these as a coordinating focal point. If you don't have logs you can fill a tartan bag with pine cones for a natural festive touch!
In the bedroom use bedding sets in checks of neutral colours which will blend effortlessly with your existing décor. Look for bedding sets which have matching full-length curtains which can be tied back using tartan ribbon to add a quirky interest! Scatter cushions made from checks and tartans can also be added to the bed for further affect. A tartan rug folded neatly across the foot of the bed will ensure that even the chilliest of mortals will sleep well!
Dining rooms also look stunning using plaids. Again use ready made curtains in tartan or checked fabrics and look for complimentary coloured fabrics to make table runners and napkins. If you wish to add the finishing touches you need to get a skate on as there are only 15 more days to Christmas!
Many high street and online retailers have haberdashery departments where you can pick up checks and tartan ribbons and fabrics. Look for disposable plates with a tartan pattern to save on washing up!
Traditionally plaids and tartans are made from the thick materials which have a high percentage of wool, making them the ideal feel good factor items for your home, which are perfect for the festive season.
If you're not having an open fire it's a good idea to use an assortment of table and floor lamps to create a warm ambience to your lounge. Try and vary the heights of the lamps, as well as choosing soft tone bulbs which give a gentle hue. Alternatively you could always just use the lights on your Christmas tree to create a cosy atmosphere for two!
