Living room love: putting on the glitz

Putting on the glitz embraces the iconic eras when Hollywood and the stars of yesteryear where at their peak. With a distinctive nod towards retro this interior design style is perfect for those who have an out-going personality and love to put on a show. However, adding glitz and retro glamour to your living room doesn't have to be blown out of proportion, unless of course you want to. Glitz and glamour can be rolled into one with this exciting style; decadence and luxury prevail along with the use of reflective surfaces and fabrics which provide more than a mere covering for furnishings and window dressings.

Typically Hollywood glitz uses a black and white monochromatic colour scheme, but you can also achieve the look using beige and creams just as long as you stick with the key points which make up the style. Full length velvet curtains in mink or pale cream are the ideal window dressing if you're steering away from a black and white colour scheme. Make sure that they are voluptuous (think along the lines of Marilyn Monroe!) and that they  just skim the floor. If your budget allows polished white marble floors are reminiscent of the era, however for most of us this is an impossibility, so opt for plain beige carpet or a highly polished wooden floor.

You can add rugs to bring another texture and a luxury look to the floor. Keep to plain rugs with a deep pile or go for a faux animal skin. Furniture should also reflect the era, leather sofas and chairs are ideal, especially if they are cream. Pile on the cushions, remembering to add a variety of different tactile textures such as satin, silk and velvet. Sequin embellished cushions are also perfect to create extra glitz and glamour.

To make your living room sparkle and shine reflective surfaces are a must, along with the use of mirrors and decadent lighting. Wall mounted large mirrors with cream frames are ideal when placed on the opposite wall to a window – the natural light entering the room will bounce off the mirror, making the room look more spacious, light and airy. At night a mirror with lighting on the inside edge of the fame, (similar to mirror found in film stars' dressing rooms) will help to bring a new dimension to the room. Chandeliers and glass-topped coffee tables will also add to the quality of the room's design and style.
