Unrefined and natural are the two best words to describe a rustic interior and furthermore you don't have to live in the country to adopt the look and style for your home. The use of natural materials crops up once again with wood being a principal player along with exposed stone work. This interior design style also takes us back to our roots and the days when life was by no means easy but it didn't have the trappings and pressure of today's fast paced and hectic lifestyles.

Pine is a particularly good choice for rustic interiors, although sturdier woods such as oak can also be used. Wooden beams or even timber cladding ceilings will bring a rustic charm to a room. Wooden furniture should also be included, with the latest rough finishes and robust chunky designs being ideal. If you want to 'go green' reclaimed wood is perfect and can be used for flooring or to make your own bespoke headboard or coffee table.

Exposed stone work walls or fireplaces will be perfect additions to a rustic home; stone flooring can also be used to achieve the look.

Non-precious metals such as tin, brass and pewter are ideal for curtain poles and lamp bases.

Rich earthy colours, such as moss greens, rusty reds, tans and browns with muted tones can all be used successfully. You can also included brighter colours via accessories and soft furnishings if you think the colour scheme is a little flat and uninteresting.

These should reflect a modest and non-exuberant quality, cotton, wool, tartan curtain fabrics and plaids are perfect fabrics to create a rustic look to your home. If you want to inject some bright colour lime green curtains will look striking next to honey pine or white birch.

Wood or leather are ideal, the distressed leather look will work really well and look more in keeping with the theme that bright, shiny new pieces.

Stripped pine floorboards are the way to go, add comfort to your feet by using large rugs in muted shades to compliment your rustic colour scheme. Buy rugs direct if you can't find a colour, style or size you want as you'll have more choices.

Anything made of wood, metal or stone will compliment the theme, again hand-crafted or home-made would be ideal. Collections found from walks in the woods, such as pine cones or chestnuts shells displayed in wicker baskets or clear vases, interestingly shaped pieces of wood can also be included.
