How to Re-Vamp Your Home Office on a Small Budget
Whether you have a dedicated room for your home office or need to squeeze one in under the stairs or in the corner of a room, there's no getting away from the fact that in order to work you need, not only to have the correct mindset, but you should also ensure that the colour scheme and furnishings are conducive to creating a motivating work atmosphere.
Easier said than done! No, not really, it may be nice to have a bespoke home office with plenty of storage space, shelving and a large desk at which to work, but this is only possible if you have a room which is solely used as an office. Remember the saying 'don't move out, move up'? - that was bandied about some years ago – well the same applies today, especially as we're now officially in a double-dip recession.
Now is a good time to take a look at your loft space to see if it can be used. As we've seen this week small budget doesn't mean you have to make compromises on soft furnishings. It just takes a little interior design flair, and a little time being a savvy online shopper to get the items you need to turn your office into a workable space which is light, bright and airy.
But this post isn't about building from new, it's about re-vamping what you already have. If your office is situated in a poky dark corner of a room, lighten the area with pale coloured walls, use lighting to help brighten the area, angle lamps are ideal and give the 'office look'. If you find it hard making the differentiation between work and home use large rugs to define each area – as you step onto the office rug you should in theory make the distinction and switch to work mode!
Offices in attics and loft conversions can also be re-vamped without too much expense. There's a new range of Velux skylight blinds now available – in the past roller blinds were the only option for skylight windows however, now Velux have Venetian style blinds which fit their skylight windows. This style of blind is ideal for offices as you'll be able to adjust the slat angles which can help direct the light onto your work area without you being blinded by the sun. Just a few simple alterations to your colour scheme and soft furnishings and a home office can be re-vamped with very little effort or expenditure.
