Festive dining in style with colour co-ordinated red & gold

The most traditional of Christmas decors is red, green and gold, which for some is associated with red being the blood of Christ, green bringing eternal life and gold is one of the gifts given to Jesus by the Magi. Other old traditions and pagan festive also use these 3 colours for Christmas décor and include using holly and ivy which have their own symbolic connotations. For most of us red and gold, maybe with touches of green with a Christmas tree, have become staple Christmas colour combinations.

However, each year new and exciting decorations and ways of decorating a table have become the norm and this year is no different. This year the trend for gold and red are being used to create stunning table and dining room décor as the really great thing is that it is really hard to get this colour combo wrong. A red table runner placed on a crisp white table cloth or one highlighted with gold can really make your table stand out. Gold napkin rings are perfect for tying the place settings with the decorations – if you're not the artistic type you can simply scatter gold style confetti onto the table runner and intersperse with tiny gold baubles.

If you want to protect your table top red table cloths and co-ordinating napkins will bring an air of refined elegance and help mop up any accidental spills – alternatively you could set your table with trendy placemats as a way of bringing another element to your décor. For a more traditional table red, green and gold tartans can look stunning, these colours also tie in well with Poinsettias and greenery if you want to go for a more natural look.

Long strands of ivy can be twirled around and along the table, bring natural pine cones and maybe sprigs of holly is you don't want an glitzy and commercial looking table. Small sprigs of mistletoe are also ideal for using as napkin décor. As with any festive colour scheme it's best to stick with two main colours and perhaps add a third for contrast otherwise you may find that you intentions of chic style turn into a overly fussy mess which lacks definition.
