Feng Shui Interior Design Tips 4: For Bathrooms
When it comes to the energy flow of Feng shui in a bathroom, the possibilities are pretty small. Bathrooms were invented long after Feng shui was put into place. Most of these rooms are small and tucked away in corners of homes and the amount of time spent in this room are slight. However, there are ways that you can improve the sanitation and keep the flow of design of the house within the room. Rules on colour are open except for the colour green.
Green should never be used for wall colour in bathrooms because of the reflection of lighting. This is not a Feng shui thing but a basic decorating tip. Green has a tendency to catch the light and reflect back to objects, such as faces, causing a pasty white image. No other colour has this affect and green can be used for accents, just not wall colour. When bathrooms did come into homes in ancient times, the door was always pulled shut when not in use for sanitation reasons.
Chamber pots were used and no one wanted the sight to be exposed to the rest of the house or company. Today, rule of thumb is to keep the door shut and hang a mirror on the outside door to deflect the chi from entering drains and dissipating. Always close the toilet lid before flushing. When a toilet is flushed, germs are stirred and can travel up to six feet in all directions.
Cleanliness is a huge factor in Feng shui. Use materials in your bathroom that are easy to clean to keep the space as clean and germ free as possible. Carpeting is not a good choice for floor covering since germs and bacteria can breed in the fibres whenever moistened. Choose warm flooring like wood planks or heated tiles that will lessen the cold damp feeling.
If you select wood make sure that it has been well treated with a water moisture barrier. Wooden blinds or ready made blinds in natural colours make the ideal window dressing. If your bathroom is located upstairs and over the kitchen, the downward flow of water will extinguish the energy and send negative energy to the room below through the water system.
To cure this, place a three-inch round mirror directly above the toilet on the ceiling to reverse the downward cycling of energy. Also hang something made of crystal in the centre of the bathroom.
