Contemporary interiors 6 - black is black in the kitchen

Black kitchens are right on-trend and could be here to stay! So how can you use black in the kitchen? And how can you use it successfully? We have some ideas and tips to share with you - so take full advantage!
  • Our first suggestion for black kitchens is very hip but it does come at a price! High gloss used for cabinets is the hottest designer trend for kitchens this year but it does take some looking after in terms of cleaning (worry about that later). On the plus side - using a gloss black will open up the space and works just as well in smaller kitchens, who could do with the extra light reflecting off the surfaces. One tip though for the mini kitchen - try to keep the colour black grounded and use a white or light colour for above, including pale coloured made to measure blinds or ready made blinds for windows.
  • Using a lot of black can be quite intense within kitchens - but that doesn't stop us eyeing up black units! To freshen up the black kitchen you could use free standing units where legs are on show and more floor space is visible. The lighter your floor covering the more the kitchen is opened up.
  • Black with equal amounts of white and some grey is a monochrome look that works well for contemporary kitchens. Again, gloss finishes on the units and stainless steel accessories will give a very modern and polished look. If you go for simple, classic lines - your kitchen will have more staying power.
  • The optimum contemporary black kitchen will be very sleek. Splash-backs will be a continuation of the worktops and cupboards will be free of handles all together. Minimalist, polished and brimming with designer style.
  • Lighting will be an important part of your planning if you wanted to make the leap towards a predominantly black kitchen. Even if your kitchen receives lots of natural light during the day, black units will need a generous amount of lighting come evening.
