Contemporary Designs - Kitchens

Contemporary kitchen designs are akin to contemporary designs for other rooms having sleek, clean lines with the latest appliances and 'must have' gadgets. However, to create a chic and stylish kitchen this year you'll need to be thinking along the lines of sexy curves! Curves are right on-trend with free-standing island units which give plenty of work surface as well as additional storage.

High gloss and reflective surfaces complete the look and whilst some of the polished marble and granite work surfaces can be very pricey there are surfaces which work just as well for less cost but maximum impact. If you have a small kitchen maximise light by having every surface and cupboard door with a reflective surface.

For a sleek and seamless look appliances should be built-in and yet free standing units for additional storage and working areas are certainly permissible and is a great way of up-dating a kitchen on a tight budget. Don't be afraid of adding vibrant colours into the kitchen, if you prefer a more classical look but just want to update it try painting cupboards with high gloss paint in tomato red or plush purple.

Add high gloss Venetian blinds to bring a sense of balance and cohesion to the room. Wood, such as oak, remains as popular as ever and gives you the choice of light or dark colours. Bring them up to date by having a polished work surface. Bring the room together by choosing wooden Venetian blinds as the window dressing.

Lighting is a main feature of this year's contemporary kitchen designs, industrial style pendant lighting suspended over work surfaces and central islands will add to the overall look and style effectively. If you also use your kitchen for entertaining try the latest lighting which changes colour on a timed rotation, it will certainly make a talking point during diner!

Just as bold prints are on-trend for contemporary bedrooms and lounges your kitchen walls should be given similar treatments with patterns in mosaic tiles or bare bricks which have been treated and sealed, to compliment the industrial look. Stainless steel can also be used with great effect and are a low cost way to get a contemporary look, just remember not to let it become watermarked or stained and you'll have a fabulous contemporary look which won't go out of fashion.
