Coastal interior design ideas for kitchens

When using a coastal theme in kitchens you have, on principle, two directions to choose from. The first being the more classical blue and white colour combinations, the other is to use wood as the basis of the design and build a coastal theme around it. Wooden kitchen cupboards remain a firm favourite and suit all styles of homes, the difference with coastal is that you need to choose lighter wood colours such as light oak, beech and ash, rather than the tones of mahogany or oak.

To achieve a coastal look you can be canny and combine white and light wood colours; for example base cupboards could be wood, while the wall cupboards could be white or vice-versa. In small kitchens maximising the available space is vital; so it's wise to opt for high wall cupboards rather those which have a void space above them.

Likewise, centre islands are being seen in new kitchen designs and are ideal for providing extra work surface and storage space. If your coastal theme leans more towards Shabby Chic the central island can be replaced with a small table and chairs, which would look superb when painted white and pale blue and given the distressed look. Kitchen blinds are the perfect window dressing which is both practical and versatile.

To blend with the coastal theme wooden blinds in tonal colours would dress your windows beautifully. If you choose roller or Roman blinds in wood-weave you'll be able to expose as much of the window as you can during the day to let natural light flood in and give you unobstructed views outside – the beach or sea would be idyllic.

Sea-foam colours of pale bluey greens can be used for tiling and will take away the clinical look of plain white. On floors large rugs in pale blue will not only help to ground your colour scheme they will be appreciated by your bare feet, especially if you have tiled floor! As this is the kitchen accessories should be subtle and yet still show hints of the coastal theme – don't get fixated about having to use sea shells when boats, oars etc. will provide the coastal look you're working towards.

Shabby Chic kitchen accessories can include sea heather displayed in glass containers, table linen with a coastal theme or antique china dishes and serving platters which have fish, prawns and lobsters detailing. Look online for interior design ideas and remember that coastal doesn't mean you have to include sand in your sandwiches!
