If I Have More Than One Lamp In A Room Do They All Need To Be The Same?
The quick answer to this is of course is simply no. There is no rule that says that you need to match all your lamps whether they be table, floor or pendant. Sometimes when everything matches too much a room can look boring and 'samey' so don’t be afraid to try different looks, you might be amazed at the combinations you can achieve. Of course there is nothing wrong with having matching pairs of lamps if that is the look you want to achieve.
Quite often when we have designed a new look for our room, whatever room it may be, and we have all the main items set just how and where we want them our thoughts turn to lighting. This is most definitely the wrong way to go.
Your lighting is just as big a part of your décor as your new sofa or your new bed or whatever room you are revamping, and your chosen look can be finished off with the addition of good lighting.
Always take into account the colour scheme you have chosen but that doesn’t mean that you have to have matching lamps. Your lamps and light fittings can be as varied as you want them to be.
One way is to tie lamp shades in to the basic room colour by toning them in with various shades whilst using different styles. Another modern look is to have brightly coloured lamp shades that add a 'wow' feeling to a room. Whether tall or short, fat or long, modern or classic your shades can bring depth to an otherwise bland room.
A few things to consider before you start. If you are choosing bed side table lamps then they can by all means match if that is the look you want to create but bear in mind that your partner's side of the bed probably doesn’t match yours so why should their lamp? But even more important is the size of the shade, be careful not to choose a shade that you knock over every time you get in or out of bed. Your shade should be smaller than your table surface.
Something else to consider is that in general a rounded base looks better with a round shade and the same if your lamp is squared. This is not a hard and fast rule but it does sometimes help.

You can mix standard or floor lamps with table lamps and wall lights. Your chosen lamp shades can complement each other in colour or pattern, but a mix of colours and styles can work well when they are cleverly placed around the room.
