How to measure for roman blinds

Knowing how to measure for roman blinds is an important first step in purchasing your new roman blinds. You need to be able to measure for them correctly in order to ensure they fit your windows perfectly on arrival. How to measure for roman blinds differs depending on how they are to be fitted; if they are to be fitted inside a window recess the shortest measurements will be recorded whereas outside a window recess only the main measurement is needed. In both instances you will need to measure both the width and the drop. For full details keep reading.

How To Measure For Roman Blinds Inside A Window Recess

Inside recess measurement

Understanding how to measure roman blinds is an important first step in purchasing your blinds. To measure, take three measurements across the inside of the window recess, at the top, the middle and the bottom of the window and three measurements down, at the left, the right and in the centre, as shown above. Use the spaces provided in the diagram to record your measurements. Select ‘Recess Size’ in the measurement option box when ordering and supply us with the narrowest measurement across and the shortest measurement down. Please do not make any allowance yourself.

Measuring For Window Blinds

Note: Please be aware when ordering recess fit roman blinds that if you select ‘Recess Size’, a necessary adjustment will be deducted for clearance and your finished blind size will be slightly smaller than the recess size given, to allow the blind to fit and work properly inside the recess and any restrictions. This is usually between a minimum of 0.5cm and a maximum of 1cm off each side and a maximum of 1cm off the length. Please do not make any allowance yourself. All blinds are supplied ready corded and attached to the tracks, with all rods and bottom bars sewn in.

Important – The standard brackets supplied with made to measure Roman blinds, can be face or top fixed and are therefore suitable for inside or outside recess fit.

  • Use a metal tape measure - fabric ones can stretch and give an inaccurate reading
  • Measure at the position where your blind will be fitted to clear all window catches etc.
  • Measure within any tiles or other limitations inside the recess which may affect the finished working width of the blind.
  • Measure in centimetres and round each measurement to the nearest 0.1cm
  • Measure all windows individually even if they look the same size

How To Measure For Roman Blinds Outside A Window Recess

Outside recess measurement

When fitting a Roman Blind outside a window recess, we recommend that the blind extends at least 7 – 10 cm to each side of the window recess and approximately 7 to 10cm (where possible) above and below, to ensure that the blind gives adequate coverage of the window when closed. If the window sill protrudes more than 5cms from the recess, the blind may have to stop at sill level rather than dropping below it, as this will obstruct the smooth operation of the blind.

Make a note of the new calculated measurement in the spaces provided on the diagram and select ‘Actual Blind Size’ in the measurement option box when ordering. This will be the exact size that your finished blind will be made to.

Measuring Roman Blinds

Note: Please be aware when ordering outside recess fit roman blinds that if you select ‘Actual Blind Size’, the measurements you give will be the exact finished size of your blind (within a few mm tolerance) with no further adjustment deducted. This provides you with the opportunity to specify a particular size for your blind.

Recess Blinds

When a window is not flush to the wall, a window recess is created. Blinds can be fitted both inside the recess and outside. Deciding how to measure for roman blinds will depend on whether they will sit inside or outside a window recess.

Recess blinds are a great option for controlling the amount of light inside a room and allow window ornaments, picture frames and decorations to be always displayed whereas outside recess blinds allow for more light to be distributed in the room.
