Creating the illusion of size with striped window blinds
Striped curtain fabric has the ability to trick the eye into seeing what in reality isn't there. This is beneficial when it comes to making window appear taller or wider, giving the illusion of more space. Tricks of the eye are used by interior designers to make rooms appear larger and more spacious. You can use these same optical illusions to make your window appear larger by choosing window blinds with a stripe pattern.
When windows are short they can make a room look and feel restricted. Adding window blinds with a vertical stripe automatically draws the eye upwards, giving the illusion of more height. Moreover, if you want to give the illusion of a lower ceiling vertical stripes should be avoided. Roman blinds with a vertical stripe pattern can be placed outside of the window recess to make a window appear slightly wider and much taller. This interior design trick is an easy way of enlarging windows visually when architecturally window replacement isn't possible due to building regulations and/or financial restrictions.
Roller blinds with vertical stripes are equally as proficient at giving the illusion of taller windows, however, this effect is only seen when the blind is lowered to cover the entire window.
Horizontal stripes work by tricking the eye into thinking that a window is wider. Placing the blind outside of the window recess will add to the illusion. This trick of the eye is ideal for small windows in bathrooms, kitchens, cloakrooms and spare bedrooms.
Roman blinds with a horizontal stripe are masters of illusion in spare or box bedrooms. Not only will they make the room appear larger, lighter and airier, the colours of the stripes can be coordinated with bedding and other soft furnishings to create a balanced, cohesive look.
In kitchens and bathrooms blinds are by far easier to maintain and keep clean than conventional style curtains. Many of the specialised and PVC fabrics of roller blinds can be sponge cleaned, they are also resistant to mildew and mould which can be a problem in damp, humid atmospheres. Roman blinds made with striped fabrics are available in a variety of fabric thickness. Those with dim-out or blackout properties are ideal for bedrooms and media rooms, where they prevent unwanted outside light from entering the room.
Likewise, blinds and curtains used in windows that get a lot of direct sunlight, for example south facing windows, can be subject to fading, fabrics with blackout, thermal or insulating blind or curtain lining fabric can help prevent this from occurring.
Stripe Size MattersThe visual illusion that stripes offer can be enhanced by the width of the stripe on the fabric. Wide stripes are ideal for large windows and narrow stripes for small windows. Furthermore, stripes with straight edges will give a direct line for your eye to travel up or across, whereas those with a slightly wavy edge will make the eye wander and reduce the effectiveness of the optical illusion of more height or width. As you can see striped window blinds are the masters of illusion, use them to your advantage to make your windows appear bigger than in reality.
