Designer Insights with Creatively Living

Katie and Holly are sisters with a love of all things DIY, design and decor related and a shared passion for turning what most would see as trash into a treasure. They’ve developed their decorating styles and techniques through need as much as desire. They have large families and not so large salaries, so houses must come big and inexpensive, and be made beautiful as they go. Their blog Creatively Living shows how they have developed and fine tuned the artful skill of turning ‘trash into treasure’.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?

Eclectic for sure! Eclectic leaning towards classy, contemporary.  As much as we love a cheap DIY, we don’t want our houses to look “homemade”, therefore we are often “fancifying” our projects to obtain that high-end look on a budget.

2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?

It usually always starts by seeing what we want, and then using what we have on hand. This usually yields fantastic results!  (See Holly’s Bubble Mirror below made out of leftover Easter Eggs.)

3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?

We would probably have to say certain bloggers that we follow. Bloggers that can take basic finds and make a space incredible. Some people are plain genius and can DIY a space to look better than anything in a magazine….and they are basically reworking cast-offs. Vintage Revivals, A Beautiful Mess, The Nester and East Coast Creative are a few of our faves.

4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?

Pinteresting our key words works well for us. Say you need inspiration for styles for black & white curtains, simply adding “black”, “white” and “curtains” in the search, will produce approx. 1 million black and white curtain ideas! Following A LOT of people that we love on social media constantly bombards us with ideas too!

5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

Simply doing what we love and sharing it with people who love similar things! There is just something thrilling about sharing a new DIY that inspires others. Creating projects and spaces out of cast-offs is just wired in us. We won’t ever stop/can’t stop creating!
