Samantha Conner is the founder of craft blog, Crafty Texas Girls which she started writing back in 2009. Samantha’s blog is so named, as it describes what she and her daughter love to do together. Her blog now serves as a portal for sharing her many creations and chronicling her journey of homemaking, crafting and all things DIY. She is also dedicated to creating a beautiful and loving home. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I like a lot of contrast in my rooms. That contrast comes from texture, color and a variety of high and low priced pieces. It not only adds visual interest but makes for a cozy, eclectic feel.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I start with one piece, usually a home accessory. Then I build a color story and find pieces that support that theme. I love Pinterest, home décor magazines, and finding inspiration in local spaces that are well designed. It’s amazing what you can see when you stop and look.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I have met so many bloggers who are insanely talented. Most of them are not professionally trained in interior design. They just have a beautiful sense of style and creativity. Some of these women I have never even met in person, we have just connected through our blogs. A few years ago I did attend a convention where I was lucky enough to meet Edie from “Life in Grace” blog and Amy from “Living Locurto” blog. I admire their ability to make spaces feel warm and friendly and still sophisticated. These women are just as lovely in person as they are online.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I love to comb through small boutiques and antique shops. Old is new and it always amazes me how something considered ‘out of date’ can suddenly become modern when paired with the right pieces. I like this trick because it is budget friendly and it keeps your home looking unique as opposed to a page in a catalog.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I never thought anyone would come to me for design advice. I have always just picked what I liked. I didn’t really think about why I made those choices. But over the years, as I have added layers to my home, I feel more confident in my eye for design. I think the secret to a beautiful home is time, effort, and lots of editing. Trust yourself and keep at it. Just like Rome, a home is not built in day.
