Fiona Parry-Jones is the founder of Von Haus design studio, in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from the UK, Fiona began her career as a colour and textile designer, later discovering her passion for interior design. Her mission is to bring spaces to life by focusing on detail, quality and creativity. In particular she helps her clients to express their personality and vision through her design projects. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I like a balance of old and new designs to create a relaxed and functional space. I love to use bright colours and patterns in bold ways to create a statement and have some fun with my interior spaces.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Colour is one of the most important aspects of my work and I start all projects with a moodboard of ideas to create a colour scheme with my clients. This helps them visualise what they want to achieve before moving on to more practical processes in the overall design.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
There are so many people I have worked with who have inspired me along the way. The person I will always remember and admire is Welsh artist Peter Prendergast who taught me so much about colour, art and drawing. He encouraged me to follow my passion as an artist and designer and inspired me to become successful and happy at what I do.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I like to find new colours on my travels and collect anything from fabric samples, paint chips to natural found objects, to inspire new ideas. I have an obsession with tiles and love shopping around for interesting patterns and textures that I can incorporate into a project. I also like to read blogs as they are a great source of inspiration when it comes to finding new products and creativity. This works well as you have so much information at a click of a button, which is handy when you are pushed for time.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
A lot of persistence and determination has brought me to this point in my career. My advice would be find what you love doing and take a bit of a risk. Also make sure you network like mad as you never know who will be there to give you the opportunity you are looking for. My mantra is never give up on your dream.
