When it comes to making a great first impression regarding your house or apartment, the best place to start is your living room. It is, after all, the first indoor area of your home that guests and visitors have the opportunity to enjoy – or cringe at, for that matter. Fortunately, you have so many opportunities to enliven your living room and, thus, make it a truly liveable, beautiful and enjoyable space to be in.
You don’t even have to worry about spend lots of money on buying expensive furnishings and furniture since your old ones will suffice for the makeover. Instead, you will invest in affordable soft furnishings like curtains for the windows, rugs on the floor and cushions on the sofa, among others.
Here are a few ideas that you can try as soon as you finish reading this article. Of course, you must experiment with the looks of your living room until you are satisfied with the results.
Curtains with a Contrast:
For living rooms that appear too monochromatic, we suggest starting with curtains containing contrasting colours on the colour wheel. These contrasting colours accentuate each other’s beautiful hues while also making the area pop, so to speak. For example, look for curtains with a vibrant blue background coupled with prints in chocolate brown.
Yet another way to use contrasting colours in curtains is to pair them with other soft furnishings in the room. Thus, you can choose whether to keep the old curtains and buy cheap rugs or buy new curtains and keep the old rug. For example, the curtains can be in a solid sunny yellow shade to make the living room appear larger while large rugs can be cyan in colour.
Bold Patterns on the Sofas:
Let’s assume that the sofas and chairs in the living room are in solid colour like black or white leather. To add oomph to the area without spending on a new sofa set, you can add throw pillows, cushions and spreads with bold patterns in vibrant colours. Watch as your old black or white leather sofa look cosier, more inviting and more stylish with the simple additions of blue, green or red cushions.
A word of warning on the use of throw pillows and cushions even on large leather sofas: Sit on the sofa with a pillow behind your back. If you are sitting near the edge of the sofa or you are forced to cradle a pillow on your lap just to sit down, then the throw pillows are too bulky – change these into thinner pillows albeit with similar bold patterns.
With a few yards of fabric and a little ingenuity, you can turn a drab living room into a fabulous space you can truly call your own.
