Another home trend that we can expect to see rising this year is Floral Folk – a very optimistic décor with big florals and bright, cheery colours. As you might expect from a Folk style, there are elements of both bohemian and eclectic so some creativity is involved and the desire to experiment with your interiors. This will definitely be right up your street if you are into home crafts and DIY projects where you can put your own special touch on everything from textiles to quirky accessories.
Colours – In a word or two – bright and beautiful! These are colours inspired by a summer garden with rosy reds, violet purples and gerbera oranges all brightening up those interiors. From these colours though it would seem that saturated purples are favoured and used for larger pieces with other hues coming in as accents – darker purples act like the black in the room to ground and define a space. How would a room cope with so much colour? With white walls, flooring and textiles to break it up.
Flooring, Walls & Ceiling – As we just mentioned, the use of vibrant colour in the room calls for a base of white and plenty of natural light – it would work especially well in rooms with large windows (and a view to the garden). It would be ideal if you can start with white floors, walls & ceiling or for less contrast use the lightest of greys for walls.
Furniture – With a lot of colour and pattern dominating the room’s design, you will want to create some order with simple furniture pieces – nothing too grand or decorative. In a lounge you could go for two modern two-seater sofas, one upholstered in a purple linen and the other in a lighter shade or white. Let us not forget this is a folk trend so where you can, choose wooden pieces of furniture such as a coffee table in a light crafted wood.
Textiles – It is with textiles that you can bring in all those beautiful popping colours and floral prints – mix and match prints and textures for a more eclectic look. We love floor length ready made curtains with a big bloom print – they will be a big home trend for dining rooms, bedrooms and lounges this year. Rugs with bold floral prints are also becoming more popular and you can expect to find many contemporary designs online over the coming months. Cheap cushion covers are another great way to mix and match textures and prints, all the while using them together with block colours to unify the look – try a satin cushion in lavender for that plum coloured sofa and others with florals and quirky details.
Lighting & Accessories – There is no denying that this home trend is very feminine, what with all those blooms! Here, masculine details could throw the look off course so use more feminine qualities when choosing lighting and accessories – curvaceous coloured glass vases, dainty cup and saucer sets (with flower motifs) and anything that has been lovingly crafted by hand.
