Whether it be a static caravan or cottage in the heart of the Pennines or a villa looking out across the Mediterranean Sea a holiday home provides the owner with a sanctuary, away from the everyday hustle and bustle, in a location ideal for them and their hobbies. Although most of us do not want to spend considerable time labouring and maintaining the property we would also like it to feel personal, comfortable and welcoming. This article takes you through some simple, cost effective and stylish ways to quickly and effortlessly add some character and individual charm to your property.
The Softer Side of Life
The simplest way to add some style and colour into a room is via the soft furnishings. From adding a few scatter cushions or a throw to reupholstering a window seat these small additions not only inject a pattern and design theme but also give the overall finish a bit of a facelift. Don’t be scared of using bright and bold colours and patterns: bring the sunshine in to your home and use vivid yellows, sea blues, reds, pinks and greens.
Remember that this design scheme is for you to enjoy and cherish as opposed to being hugely practical. Furthermore, for an authentic look visit your local fabric or interior retailers to buy regional produce, fabrics and cushions.
Add to this simple voile drapes in tranquil whites or exciting bright shades to provide you with privacy but enable the beautiful sunlight to filter the home. Whilst basking in the warm sunshine why not make yourself your own tiebacks by threading shells or beads or twisting dry grasses. If required, use Venetian or roller blinds to provide a light barrier that can be pushed to the outer extremes of the window bay when required.
Similarly, you may need to hang a beaded curtain across patio doors to deter insects entering the home. Choose a complementary style to the rest of your décor and sweep it back within your curtains when not required for a textured and novel window dressing.
Most of you will choose a holiday home because of its location and spectacular viewpoints. Consequently, don’t take away from the surroundings my filling your home with intricate wallpapers and dramatic pictures. Instead keep your walls simple, bright and white and hang wall art, paintings, mirrors and frames where appropriate. Shop around your local markets to find individual treasures or why not try painting the local scenery yourself. Instead of trying to compete, let the items on the walls tell a story of your times and feelings towards the place around you.
Take It Easy
Once a bit of warmth and character has been injected in to your home spend some time to add some luxuries to the property. Why not purchase some beautiful loungers in co-ordinating fabric to that used inside the home. Or, splash out and install water features either indoors or out. Enjoy your home with friends and buy wine coolers, co-ordinating BBQ platters, funky placemats and cocktail glasses. All these elements will give your home that extra something which will make you and your friends return again and again.
