| Trends | Top trends and styles this season |
Now that we’ve looked at the top colours for the season, let’s have a look at the styles and trends that are in vogue. If you’ve decided on your colour scheme but still don’t know what kind of look you want, then maybe a theme loosely based on one of the season’s current trends will give you some inspiration here. The key trends are Purple (we’ve got that covered!), Leather, Opulence, Fur, Winter Florals, Oriental and Geometrics. Particularly pertinent to interiors, are the latter three, so here’s a brief selection of products and ideas to help you to get the looks from Terry’s. |
| Oriental | A great look for bedrooms |
Oriental prints and vibes are another huge tendency for the cold season, particularly for bedrooms. While purple may be the colour of the season, the oriental look favours red – a colour associated with fortune and good luck, particularly in China. East meets West too, as deep mauve pinks from the new purple colour palettes are used with an Oriental flavour to add a modern, feminine feel to a typically simplistic look. Exotic, dramatic, colours in eclectic mixes, create a bold look with a more Indian influence and there are floral influences of poppy, lotus flower, cherry blossom, water lilly and magnolia. The secret to creating an oriental style bedroom is not to worry too much about historical accuracy, but instead to adopt an overall style or look. Traditional Japanese homes, for example, are based on ideas of balance, harmony, economy and beauty. The beauty comes through in simplicity and its relationship to function. Bedrooms are simply decorated and have the minimal amount of furnishings. The bed is the main focus and whilst the fabrics are usually silks and lightweight materials, in the UK, we need duvet sets! Storage space is also necessary within Western bedrooms. So, loosely basing your style on an oriental theme is an effective way of creating a touch of the orient within your home without the constraints of accurate details. Keep the walls plain and use your bed and bedding as the accent colour. The latest low beds, without headboards, are the ideal choice for the oriental look. Keep the window dressing simple by using blinds rather than curtains. White or cream Venetian blinds are a good choice as they provide privacy when needed and offer complete control over the amount of light entering the room. Bamboo or wood weave roller blinds are also appropriate for Oriental window dressings. If you do want use fabric, again keep it very simple and consider using panels of voiles and light weight sheers to give the impression of translucent screens, indicative of the traditional paper screens of Japan. Wood floors are more in keeping than fitted carpets, but if you’re not up for changing the floor then add an oriental style feature rug in relevant colours. Black picture frames are a good style tip. Frame some images of oriental styled flowers for an inexpensive design touch that is instantly effective and just as easily removed again. It is important to remember that economy is important. There is no need to spend a fortune to achieve your own unique oriental styled bedroom! |

Pink Oriental Style Bedroom |

This room is very modern, but it still manages to emulate an Oriental feel thanks to some clever design touches. The blossom lights behind the bed, the simplistic bed frame and the delicate floral fabric of the blind, all come together to create an essentially Oriental look. Proof that accurate details are not essential to create an authentic feel. |

Bold, Eclectic Oriental Style Bedroom |
|

This bold and colourful bedroom has more of an Indian feel to it. It uses an eclectic mix of colours and textures. Metallic finishes are combined with silks and primary and citrus colours to create an exciting, invigorating and exotic scheme. Lengths of bordered silks are used to create an impressive wall hanging behind the bed. Take inspiration from the scheme to help you create a similar style in your home, easily achieved by a glamorous combination of colourful bedding and textured and patterned cushions. | Winter Florals | We seldom have a season without them |
There is seldom, if ever, as season when florals don’t put in an appearance in our interiors and this season is no exception. Floral fabric is something we have an abundance of at Terry’s. ...traditional, contemporary, bold, pale, romantic, retro, large, small....I could go on, but we’d be in to the next season by the time I’d finished! So, I have chosen my favourites in the season’s top nine On-Trend colours.

| Geometrics | Bold and colourful |
|
The term geometric usually refers to a lively pattern made from repeating and symmetrical, shapes, lines and curves. Geometrics are featuring strongly in the fashion stakes this year. The fall fashion and beauty scene is full of bold colours, bright patterns, and big accessories, everything from 60's style geometrics and two-tone black and white ones to houndstooth plaids, stripes and checks. The designs are inspired by, amongst other things, upholstery prints, wallpaper inspired prints and graphic repeats. Proof that yet again catwalk follows interiors and interiors follows catwalk! Even make-up has a geometric twist this season. The Geometric Eye is the 'in-look'. With regards to interior design, Geometrics are often busy or bold and can be hard to live with in volume. It's easy to get it wrong. The key is to keep your scheme relatively plain and simple and to add accents and contrast with some well chosen key, geometric, pieces like rugs, cushions, throws, wall hangings or a single feature wall done in a geometric paper (all of which can be easily removed or replaced to ring the changes with new trends!). |
