Denise Gasser is a mixed-media artist working from her eponymous art studio, from Vancouver. Denise taught art at a high school for two years, an experience which added depth and maturity to her own work. Since then she has immersed herself into the natural wonders of the Northwest Coast, where she shares her art studio with her two small children. Denise also studied painting and drawing at Utah State University and gained a BFA in Art Education. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Denise Gasser.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I have such an eclectic style, sometimes I feel like I’m all over the place. But my unique line quality seems to be the common thread that pulls my work together.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
With my animal illustrations it’s such a therapeutic process. I pencil in some basic guidelines, grab an acrylic pen and let the lines and patterns take me where they want to go.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I’m really excited about my new partnership with an incredibly talented designer, Ali Foreman. We recently started an Etsy shop called Paper Scissor, selling printable art and decorations. We really push each other. I’m always pushing her to simplify, and she’s always pushing me to add more and take our designs to the next level. Somewhere in between is where the magic happens! She’s a lovely person and so inspiring.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I just get outside. Everything is infused with so much beauty…anything from peonies in someone’s yard, to a patterned vase in an antique shop window…it all gets me going.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I just keep pushing ahead. Life is ever-changing and I’m continually redefining myself and my expectations. It’s not always a clear path, but I love being an artist. If you push forward and put yourself out there, good things will come back to you…sometimes it just requires patience and an open mind.
