Elizabeth Ashdown is the founder of her eponymous design studio, offering innovative and contemporary mixed media for fashion and interiors, from London. Elizabeth has undertaken commissions for Liberty and Cassamance, as well as creating woven jewellery and printed textiles. She is fascinated by structural forms and texture, and utilises vibrant colour and unusual materials. She also studied BA (Hons) Textile Design at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, gaining a First Class Honours Degree. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style focuses on combining lots of colour, texture, structure and the use of a wide range of materials. I love using bright colours and metallic tones.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I’m always gathering research on Pinterest – it’s a bit of an obsession! I always carry a camera with me and I do a lot of sketchbook work – drawing, painting, collage etc.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I respect any designer that has the confidence to pursue their own work and their own aesthetic regardless of what the prevailing trends or tastes may be. I’ve met too many fantastic designers to pick just one!
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I constantly visit museums and art galleries to research – I also visit museum’s archives and use their online collections. Pinterest is also a fantastic way to get inspired.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
A lot of hard work and determination! Never give up even if it seems like something is not working at the time – persevere with it. Seize every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how small it may seem at the time. Push yourself and learn to take risks with your work. Finally, be nice to everyone that you meet – you never know when you might meet them again.
