Moti Erdeapel is from Retrome where he designs vintage boutique hotels, both in Barcelona and Rome. Moti creates spaces that merge sustainability with comfort to offer leading designs and a complete experience. Each of his properties is designed to be environmentally friendly, by using energy saving and non-polluting systems. They also work closely with local businesses, including catering for hotel breakfasts. Retrome designs are retro and vintage, decorated with cultural objects and mid-century pieces. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Moti Erdeapel.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
At Retrome we create contemporary hotel spaces with an inspiration and materials of past decades, mainly 1900’s midcentury. Combining clean and white walls with the colorfulness and inherent quality of past decade pieces.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I First look at the city and region we are at and draw inspiration from it, then look at the space itself and see how we can adapt our design to any uniqueness that is part of the building’s DNA and to that we add our own design values and project objectives.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
My good friend and architect talent Shay Zabari has never had any official role in any of our projects but he had always been a great advisor, an inspiration and a person I could talk to in order to receive a new angle on the question at hand.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
When starting the design process of a new space I make up a storyline using the history of the building, the area or the city in order to get inspired, that connects the Retrome style and spirit with the local culture and history and helps us to decide what the interiors will look like.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I think that doing things a little different, trying to innovate and give a different interpretation to what hospitality means for us, and for our guests, both with a unique design and with a focus on personal service and local experience is what makes Retrome what it is.
