Seema Krish is a textile designer, creating fabrics that are luxurious, beautiful and environmentally sourced, working from her studio in San Francisco. Seema was born in Bombay, and is heavily influenced by Indian old-world ethics of hand-made craftsmanship and vibrant colour. She has a modern eye for technology and innovation, creating textiles with a contemporary traditional aesthetic. Seema also studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, before establishing her studio in California. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Seema Krish.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
Modern-traditional and uniquely colorful. I enjoy creating depth and dimension in textiles by layering techniques of weaving, print and embroidery and combining colors in my own way.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
My process starts by studying a particular tradition of textile making. I immerse myself into the research and learning- visiting museums, examining old documents and then enjoy sketching and painting designs inspired by the research.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I admire the artisans that produce my textiles- the block printers, weavers and embroiderers. I’m in awe of their skill and dedication to their craft, and am continually inspired by their process of making and their inherent creative response. I’m constantly humbled, and learn a lot, in their.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Putting pen or brush to paper helps in getting me inspired… the process of drawing or painting always gets me going creatively and the ideas start flowing.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Staying true to my vision of making artisanal textiles, with a single-minded focus, has led me to this point. The support of all the people who help my process- craftspeople, producers, studio staff, salespeople and my family, has been crucial. My advice is… follow your passion, take educated risks, work hard, treat those around you well and love what you do!
