Marlène Huissoud is a French-born experimental designer, working from her self-named studio, in London. Marlène works as a freelance designer for a number of companies, as well as crafting her own silk scarves which are sold globally. She has received a number of awards, including the Seed Fund award, product design winner at Designblok and nominations at Meterialica. She also graduated from Central Saint Martins’ School of Art and Design in London. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Marlène Huissoud.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I’m influenced by every kind of natural elements, in term of shapes, materials, processes and I’m trying to push the boundaries of the ‘making’ concept.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
First step: theoretical research. Second step: crazy kitchen, it is a time for experimentations. Third step: making of the final pieces and documenting the story of the project.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
My father. He inspired me a lot of course for the project ‘From Insects’ because he is a beekeeper, we worked a lot together recently and I discovered a lot of facettes of him that I didn’t know. It has been a fantastic collaboration and it is only the beginning.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Traveling is a perfect way for being inspired. Meeting new cultures and materials are key in my practice.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Trust yourself. Don’t try to be another designer, bring your style on top of the table.
