Creative trends with kate simmons
Kate Simmons is a design blogger at Mirror80 with a focus on 1980’s interiors and fashion, looking at modern interiors and design styles that incorporate elements of eighties style. Kate’s blog truly is her baby, as she is an utter #80s enthusiast and fanatic, with a love of all things excess, decadence and neon. In fact, she has recently seen an eighties revival within the industry (as can be seen with many of her on trend choices), a revival that is still unfolding. So we are pleased to share with you the creative trends of Kate Simmons.

1) What pieces of furniture have impressed you recently?
I love practical pieces, yet I'm also drawn to sculptural items that reveal true artistry. Bold colors and forms go a long way in my book! My current faves: the Slice Peach Wall-Mounted Storage Shelf from CB2, Anny Wang's ORBIT side table, the storage combination from IKEA's PS 2014 collection, and the SUZY twin chair from Sisko Design. An 1980s Pace Collection USA display case from 1stdibs dealer The Warehouse also recently caught my eye.
2) What colours are on trend right now?
Rich tones are popular each fall, and this year I'm smitten with teal and berry, especially since they manage to be both deep and colorful at the same time. I'm also very taken with CB2's current offerings in neon peach. The Memphis-Milano revival has brought candy colors such as mint back to the forefront, while grey is everywhere this season. After all, grey goes with everything, from brights to chic metallics.
3) What types of materials are on trend right now? Right now it's all about mixing materials. Marble, mirrored glass, wood and a variety of metals are being combined in some truly interesting designs for furniture and decor items. Whether it's a hanging mirror or a side table, the lines are often clean so the materials themselves can truly shine.
4) Which of your projects embodies the latest design trend? And why?
I'm quite taken with the current still life photography revival, and I'm not alone. Artisans and design houses are incorporating still life style into their product photography. The Memphis-Milano revival and the mixed materials trend both blend beautifully with still life styling, and I've found myself incorporating still life techniques into my own projects and photographs. From DIY endeavors and recipes I share with readers to creating my own still life vignettes, I've become much more intentional about artistically arranging the items and taking my time snapping photos.
