Kendra Darr is the owner of an etsy shop selling DIY fashion and style items, as well as blogger for the accompanying blog Simply {Darr}ling! By day Kendra is an electrical engineer but by night she shares her DIY projects and recipes on her blog, as well as create new and unique items for her shop. She opened her store in 2012 and has been trading ever since. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Kendra Darr.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style is colorful and happy. I love fun patterns; but everything must be symmetrical and balanced.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Whenever inspiration strikes I start investigating how to actually make what I see in my head a reality. Generally this involves a lot of web searches to see if the products exist or if I need to create them from scratch then telling my husband what I need him to do. Usually he can see what I want and is able to help make my project a reality.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I work with many people who wouldn’t be considered creative in the traditional sense but the ideas that they come up with in order to create a solution space is definitely creative and outside the box. They are able to solve real world problems by thinking differently and I can learn so much from them by watching how they approach the problem and try to analyze their thought process. Without this creative thinking many of the projects wouldn’t be as successful.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Pinterest is a great tool for getting ideas with a specific theme. I will have an idea for what I want and then use Pinterest to zero in on specifics and details that I might not have thought of.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
My day job is as an electrical engineer; this mentality leads me to take different approaches when it comes to my blog and shop. Don’t lock yourself into one type of activity for both your professional and personal life. Not many people would think that a craft blogger would also be an engineer but they actually complement each other and allow me to look at the task from different angles.
