1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style is what I call collected eclectic…and my philosophy on interior spaces revolves around living with the things we love. Our homes are not static, they evolve as we change and experience new places and perspectives. Building on this theme I love to incorporate my clients treasures into their space. They add dimension and connection, two elements necessary for a well rounded home.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I love to get to know my client… what makes them tick, smile, relax etc. I want to help them create spaces they will love to be in for many years. I often find I will discover clues through those first conversations that translate into patterns which become fantastic steppingstones to a design concept.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I have been blessed with many mentors in my life but my husband Kent is by far the most significant… We have a very unique love story which I have shared on the blog… He has had the keeping of my heart since before I was old enough to vote. The fortunate stroke of serendipity that found our love affair translating into a highly productive working relationship is something I am constantly grateful for. We think completely differently which leads to a creative energy that works for us. He is also completely supportive and… he cooks!!
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I love looking at the layers of things… gardens filled with texture, colour and drape. Faded and fabulous chippy old millwork, Even food… then I kind of deconstruct it in my mind to see why it works so well together. The exercise gives me a new perspective for creating unexpected layers in my design work.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Life… I know it sounds simplistic but it's true. My career has evolved around the different roads my life has traveled down… every step led me to new opportunities and challenges. As for advice… Don't be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Creative people are constantly exploring new ideas. Those ideas don't always transform into what you thought or hoped they would but sometimes… just sometimes, they work out far better than you ever dreamed!
