Michael Makris is managing director of Manor House Fireplaces & Stoves, a family firm that was established in the 1980’s. With a strong and well-established reputation, their ethos is based upon quality customer service and follow up support. Originally retailing wooden fire surrounds, the company has evolved with the times, now focusing on fireplaces as a style statement. This includes the addition of natural stone and and wood burners to their range. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Michael Makris.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I feel for a design to work first you have to consider its function and form. My personal taste is a simple, clean design with no superfluous decoration.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Within the Stoves and Fireplace industry people are usually unsure and unclear with what they want. Our first step when approached by a new client is to break down what the client is looking for and simplify their choice. The first step is to work with the customer to find a style, once this is established we can work on finding something that meets their level of performance, functionality, efficiency and finally their budget.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
Working in the Stoves and Fireplaces industry I get to work with some interesting and inspiring manufacturers. From British Craftsmen at Farmington quarry who have a passion and flair for Natural stone within British tradition to working with Scandinavian manufacturer Contura who produce a clean, simple yet well thought out modern design. I admire both of these equally as they both embrace their heritage which flows throughout their work.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Our Customers inspire our work the most, it is my job to find the best fireplace or woodburner possible to meet their lifestyles.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I think a lot of hard work, listening to clients and colleagues and trust which is very important in any business. Going forward I would always recommend people to follow their judgement, if you have a strong desire based on sound economic principles you can make it work.
