Interior design ideas – looking forward to christmas – living rooms

This week we're going to bring you interior design ideas in plenty of time to prepare and adjust your home ready for the festive season. In today's post we're going to focus on living rooms as this will be the main room for relaxing and socialising, especially if your Christmas tree is in your living room.

The first thing you'll need to consider is the tree. Whether you have a real tree or an artificial one is personal choice, however the size will impact on the room. You may have to shuffle your furniture around to accommodate the tree, so think about positioning and placement before you rush off to get a tree which ends up being far too big for the size of your room! With furniture rearrangement you'll also have time to clean the living room because once the tree is in place it could be difficult! If you find that you have worn or heavily stained patches on the carpet use cheap rugs to disguise the offending areas.

Many people like to place their tree in front of their window; however leave sufficient space to enable the curtains or window blinds to be closed at night. It's a sad fact that many people don't bother to draw their curtains during the festive season which enables opportunist thieves full view of your living room and its contents. So, if you have pencil pleat curtains it's a good idea to close them and then sweep them open with generous loops and hold them in place with tie-backs. Your tree will still be visible but the surrounding area will be closed off to prying eyes.

If you know you live in a high risk area for burglary it's worth investing in cheap window blinds which can be fully closed at night. Mantle pieces are ideal for displaying decorations; having a symmetrical arrangement looks stunning and professional. If you're on a tight budget why not going foraging for leaves, berries and twigs to display in vases? It's also becoming trendy to use a different colour scheme for your tree and decorations each year, with so many styles and colours to choose from there's a colour scheme to suit all styles of homes.

You can even have black artificial trees which look stunning in contemporary interiors. Whichever style you choose make sure that you feel comfortable and not embarrassed by worn flooring and furnishings. Use cushions and throws for sofas and chairs along with rugs for flooring and your living room will look fresh and new!
