How to hang venetians

Venetian blinds are extremely easy and straightforward to install. Almost all are sold with very clear and concise instructions, some even offering a helpline should you get stuck. More so than the actual fitting, it is the preparation work which requires most attention, as the checks and measurements you make prior to the fitting are what determine just how easy and how successful a task it is going to be.

Taking the time to make the following easy but vital checks will see to it that your Venetian blinds are up in a flash:

1. Measure your window

It might sound obvious but are you absolutely certain that the blind is the right size? The last thing you want to do is go to the trouble of putting up the all of the brackets only to discover that the have to come back down, leaving your wall full of unnecessary holes.

2. Take a good look at your window mechanism

Does it open inwards? If so will it still be able to open with the blind up? If it opens outwards will you still be able to access the handle with the blind up? If a blind is likely to impede the opening of a window in any way, it is wise to consider a wall face mount rather than a window recess mounted position.

3. Check for vents

If your window has vents, your blinds should be able to clear them. Blinds that block ventilation to the room could potentially cause damp you’re your blinds do not clear the vents when fully open, again, you should face mount them rather than recess mount in order to leave a gap for air to travel through.

4. Which side of the blinds would you prefer to access the control ropes from

This is a very easy thing to overlook but ropes on the wrong side could mean having to constantly reach over a settee or cupboard. You actually want them tucked behind a cupboard for safety if you have pets or small children. If you have no real preference, you should choose the side which matches the hand that you right with as this will make opening your blinds much easier.

With these considerations taken care of, fitting is very straightforward.

The positioning of the brackets should first be marked out with a pencil. They should be equally spaced, taking particular care to avoid the internal mechanisms in the blind. Once happy with your positioning simply screw the brackets into the recess or wall using the screws provided or for extra security you could first install some plugs.

All blinds are different but most will simply slide onto the brackets at which point you will need to secure them with some form of screw or wing-nut provided with the pack. If the blind doesn’t sit flush with the window sill when it’s fully lowered, remove one or more of the brackets and insert spacers or washers to take up the gap.

*This guide can also be used to hang most other types of blinds such as vertical blinds, metal or wooden blinds as generally.
